Now, as with all public places, trains require a certain kind of etiquette. Its like the fact that no one speaks in elevators and they all face the doors. I have on occasion wondered what would happen if someone decided NOT to face the doors but thats another story altogether. No, today i'm here to talk to you about the polite way to travel on a train and also mention some of the no-no's that i have had the displeasure of witnessing.
1. Do not eat on the train. Although technically it is not prohibited, it creates an awful mess should you happen to lose your balance. Also, remember there are others on the train as well and they may not wish to have any banana mashed all over their clothes (true story, i cringe at the recollection).
2. Public hygiene is important so always remember to put deodorant on BEFORE you leave the house. Dont attempt to do it while on the train as the other passangers may think your slightly loony. But if for some unfortunate reason you have forgotten to make yourself presentable, make sure to NOT sit near anyone that would be within smelling distance. If you happen to be travelling in peak hour traffic, be generous and stand near the door, that way even if the stench is overpowering to those close to you, when the door opens at every station, passengers will still be able to gasp at some fresh air.
3. Dont do anything you would normally do in your bathroom. No spitting, no drooling, no throwing up, no trying to apply make up (with the movement of the train you just end up looking like barbie)and especially no urinating. The other day on the train the guy sitting behind me was flossing his teeth. FLOSSING HIS TEETH! on the TRAIN. I'm all for personal hygiene as i mentioned before but there are limits!
And lastly for todays installment:
4. No shushing. I understand that a certain level of volume is required and its important not to speak loudly or about inappropriate material. However, allow people to have conversations with their friends if they are doing so in an acceptable manner. Its not YOUR train. It is a public place and as such you cannot control the other passengers and demand absolute silence. I was shushed the other day because apparently i was talking too loud. I was highly offended because i make it my personal aim not to disturb any of the other people simply because that would draw attention to myself. I felt like shushing her right back! Some people!
